Little Progress in ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Negotiations

December 13, 2012 Posted by kingcade

President Obama and the House Republicans are still in negotiations when it comes to reaching a deal in regards to the dreaded ‘fiscal cliff.’ If existing laws are not changed by the end of 2012 the economic effects of the fiscal cliff could result in tax increases, spending cuts and a corresponding reduction in the US budget deficit beginning in 2013. President Obama announced that he is determined to let the Bush-era tax cuts for the upper class expire. This past Sunday, President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met at the White House to attempt a negotiation. Representatives from both parties stated, “The lines of communication remain open” after the meeting.

Some Republicans seem to be on board with the President’s plan for higher taxes for the upper class. Tennessee Senator Bob Corker stated that he is “beginning to believe this is the best route for us to take.” However, there is still a large group of Republicans who believe the most efficient route would be to close special interest loopholes. Either way, the White House and the House of Representatives do not have long, the fiscal cliff will hit in less than three weeks.

What President Obama’s Re-Election will Mean for Students

November 12, 2012 Posted by kingcade

President Obama continues to prove his commitment to lower student loan rates, which earned him immense popularity with students, aged 18-29 in this year’s election. During his last term he stopped the federal student loan interest rates from doubling and he increased funding for Pell grants, which provide support to underprivileged students. One of his biggest steps forward for students was providing them with the option of repaying their loans according to income rather than the amount borrowed.

Now elected for another term, President Obama’s ambitions are high when it comes to education. Within 10 years he wants to halve the amount by which tuition fees rise year-on-year. He also wants America to have the highest proportion of university graduates in the world by 2020. But the biggest challenge Obama will face when implementing education and economic reform is the same as in his first term – a Republican-led Congress.

Without action from Congress by July 1, 2013, interest rates on subsidized loans that are now 3.4 percent might double and Pell grants will face a funding shortfall of $7 billion in 2014. President Obama has other plans to help students, such as job training initiatives through partnerships with community colleges and the private sector in his second term, which he promises will result in 2 million job placements.

Mitt Romney’s Foreclosure Plan Similar to Obama’s

October 5, 2012 Posted by kingcade

Early in his campaign, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stated his approach towards the foreclosure crisis as, “Let it run its course.” However, as the election gets closer, Romney has announced a new plan for the foreclosure crisis that is very similar to the plan already set in place by President Obama.

Romney’s plan is a four-part plan that he says will kick-start the economy:

• He plans to facilitate foreclosure alternatives for homeowners who cannot pay their mortgage. This part of his plan would involve short sales and deeds in lieu, which is very similar to Obama’s HAMP and HARP programs.

• He plans to shut down Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which the Obama administration started slowly doing last year.

• He plans to encourage the 200,000 government-owned foreclosures to be sold. The Obama administration has already put a pilot program in place to begin selling these foreclosed properties and has successfully sold a few thousand.

• The biggest difference between the two administrations is that Romney plans to take a different approach at streamlining mortgage regulations so that it is easier for taxpayers to be approved for a loan.

“Taxmaggedon” Expected to Throw the U.S. Back into a Recession

May 31, 2012 Posted by kingcade

At the end of the year, the Bush Administration’s tax cuts are set to expire. The Obama Administration’s payroll tax cuts are also set to expire along with cuts for several federal agencies, such as the Pentagon. All of these changes are expected to send the economy into another recession beginning in early 2013. If no changes are made to the expiring cuts, the economy will take an estimated $607 billion hit.

As of now, the Republicans and the President are not in agreement on how to avoid the recession. President Obama has made it clear he will veto any attempt at continuing Bush’s tax cuts, which is precisely what the Republicans want to happen. President Obama has threatened to veto any effort to amend current policies unless Republicans agree to let the Bush tax cuts expire for households earning more than $250,000 a year.
