Two Reporters Told to Choose Who Gets Laid Off

The Kansas City Star recently told two reporters to choose who would keep their job and who would be laid off. The president and publisher of the newspaper, Mi-Ai Parrish, said the publication would be forced to cut 17 positions total. The odd layoff approach has made national news and been widely criticized by workplace experts. Parrish also insinuated the paper would continue using this approach in order to give workers the option of a severance package. She said if no one volunteered, the person with the least amount of tenure would be laid off.
Workplace expert Bob Kelleher has encouraged organizations to stay away from insourcing layoff decisions. The reason leadership positions exist is so that someone is held accountable for these kinds of decisions. In the aftermath of the layoffs, the majority of workers left will likely have little respect for the leaders of the company. It appears to the remaining workers that those who should be making the decisions lack the courage to do so.

Allen Iverson Faces Foreclosure on Atlanta Mansion

Former NBA superstar, Allen Iverson, is fighting to keep his Atlanta, GA home out of foreclosure. Iverson filed a lawsuit against the mortgage company claiming that he did not consent to the loan and that his estranged wife is the one to blame. Iverson defaulted on $1.2 million of his $5.4 million mortgage. His home was scheduled to be sold at auction on December 4th.
Iverson is in the midst of a messy divorce with his wife. He alleges that his wife signed off on the mortgage without his consent and purposely agreed to terms he could not meet in an effort to get back at him. As a result of Iverson’s lawsuit, the foreclosure proceedings have been placed on hold.

Little Progress in ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Negotiations

President Obama and the House Republicans are still in negotiations when it comes to reaching a deal in regards to the dreaded ‘fiscal cliff.’ If existing laws are not changed by the end of 2012 the economic effects of the fiscal cliff could result in tax increases, spending cuts and a corresponding reduction in the US budget deficit beginning in 2013. President Obama announced that he is determined to let the Bush-era tax cuts for the upper class expire. This past Sunday, President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner met at the White House to attempt a negotiation. Representatives from both parties stated, “The lines of communication remain open” after the meeting.
Some Republicans seem to be on board with the President’s plan for higher taxes for the upper class. Tennessee Senator Bob Corker stated that he is “beginning to believe this is the best route for us to take.” However, there is still a large group of Republicans who believe the most efficient route would be to close special interest loopholes. Either way, the White House and the House of Representatives do not have long, the fiscal cliff will hit in less than three weeks.

Florida Homeowners Eligible for Payout from Mortgage Settlement – Claim Deadline: January 18, 2013

As a part of the $25 billion national mortgage foreclosure settlement, Florida homeowners who lost their homes between January 1, 2008 and December 31, 2011 are eligible for a portion of the settlement. Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that those borrowers have until January 18, 2013 to file a claim. Qualified homeowners have been mailed forms they can simply fill out and send in to receive payment. Attorney General Bondi is urging everyone to complete these forms as soon as possible. Payment checks will be mailed out in mid-2013.
To be eligible for a payout, borrowers must have had mortgages serviced by one of the following banks: Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citi, JPMorgan Chase or Ally. Across the nation, approximately two million borrowers are scheduled to receive a payout as part of the settlement and $1.5 billion has been set aside for these payouts. The amount of the payout will depend on the number of borrowers who claim their payment. If you did not receive a form in the mail but believe you may be eligible, contact the settlement administrator at 1-866-430-8358.

HUD Offers Relief to Hurricane Sandy Victims

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently announced its plans to help the residents along with the state and local governments in Virginia who were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Along with FEMA and other organizations, HUD will provide assistance and resources for homeowners and low-income renters who are struggling as a result of the storm and may lose their home. President Obama issued a disaster declaration for 28 Virginia counties. These will be the counties that will receive the aid from HUD. HUD Secretary, Shaun Donovan announced that the Department will help provide foreclosure relief for families with FHA loans and assist in any other way they could.
HUD will allow those counties in critical condition the ability to re-allocate millions of dollars in funds toward disaster relief. HUD also granted all foreclosures and forbearance on foreclosures a 90-day forgiveness period for FHA insured homes. HUD has also made insurance available through FHA for mortgages and home rehabilitations. In addition, the Department will offer loans to state and local government for the economic development of damaged communities.

What You Can Do to Own Again After Foreclosure

After foreclosure, many people feel that it is impossible to ever own a home again. However, if you take progressive steps you can become a homeowner, again in a relatively short amount of time. For some this can take up to seven years, for others it can take as little as three years. One of the best things you can do after foreclosure is to reflect on the financial mistakes that led you there. If you are able to learn from the financial mistakes made on your first home, you are likely not to repeat them with your second home.
Your next and most important step is to work on building your credit score. The foreclosure process will damage it- but only temporarily if you play your cards right. While you are waiting to buy again, pay off your debts, cut off unnecessary spending and start saving. Chances are, you will have a little more money each month than you are used to having; however rather than spending it, learn to budget it.
Your last step is to be honest and communicate with your bank, creditors, lenders, family, etc. about your financial situation. When you reapply for a mortgage, be honest with your lender and tell them exactly what happened with your last home. Tell your lender the steps you have taken to have a better experience with this home. If you make all of these steps forward, you should have no problem owning another home.

Home Prices on the Rise for Eight Straight Months

September marked the eighth straight month where single-family home prices rose on a national scale. The S&P/Case Shiller composite index measures 20 metropolitan areas such as Miami, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. On a seasonally adjusted basis, September showed a .4% average gain between the 20 metropolitan areas. The eight-month price gains are the longest running the housing market has seen since 2009, just after the market crashed. Home prices have already made a 3.0 percent rise this year, exceeding economists expectations of 2.9 percent over the entire year.
Signs continue to point to recovery for the housing market and the economy. Progress has not been limited to home prices; it has been seen in many areas during 2012 including: a stabilized job market, a decrease in real estate inventory and record-low mortgage rates.

Columbine Survivor Faces Foreclosure

Richard Castaldo survived the Columbine High School shootings 13 years ago after being shot. He attempted to put the massacre behind him when he moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue a career in music. However, the condo he invested in is now facing foreclosure after he fell behind on his mortgage payments in February. Castaldo was advised at the time of purchase to take an interest-only loan to buy the property, leaving him with mortgage payments he could not afford after the housing bubble burst.
Castaldo is currently seeking help from the group, Occupy LA. While at one of the group’s meetings, he met an attorney who is trying to help him not fall victim to fraudulent foreclosure practices. His house will be sold at an auction on December 6, 2012 if he and his attorney are unable to stop the process.

Bankruptcy Might be in Detroit’s Future

As the city and state have failed to make headway over specific reforms, Detroit’s projected deficit is growing. City officials say that bankruptcy is the last resort if the city and state do not come to an agreement. It is estimated that the city will sacrifice a $30 million in state bond funding. Without the bond, the city will be at a $46 million deficit by next May. That kind of deficit is enough for bankruptcy to become the only option. If Detroit files for Chapter 9 bankruptcy, it will be the largest city in history to ever file for bankruptcy protection.
A deep political divide between city leaders in Detroit would make the bankruptcy process even more difficult. Municipalities filing for bankruptcy must have the state’s approval to do so. There are major differences between a company filing for bankruptcy and a municipality filing for bankruptcy. When a city files for bankruptcy, it is simply looking for ways to reorganize debts. Many city and state officials believe bankruptcy is not yet an option because it would mean giving up.
