Credit Card Debt

JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America Lose $5,000,000,000 as Credit Card Delinquencies Surge

US banks are unloading billions of dollars in bad debt that they have given up on collecting, according to new numbers from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

In its new Quarterly Banking Profile report, the FDIC says US banks reported $21.3 billion in net charge-offs in the second quarter of the year, due largely to credit card delinquencies and commercial real estate loans going bad.

This is the highest quarterly net charge-off rate since the second quarter of 2013 and 20 basis points higher than the same period last year. The main culprit: consumers struggling with higher interest rates and inflation.

The new numbers come as JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo and Bank of America individually disclose billions of dollars in collective net charge-offs in Q2.

  • JPMorgan Chase reports its net charge-offs reached $2.2 billion in Q2, up from $1.4 billion in Q2 of last year.
  • Wells Fargo reports its net charge-offs surged to $1.3 billion last quarter, up from $764 million one year ago.
  • Bank of America reports its net charge-offs hit $1.5 billion, up from $900 million year-over-year.

The FDIC says the total charge-off rate for US banks is now higher than the pre-pandemic average.

Credit Card Borrowing Surges in U.S. – More defaults to come?

The U.S. economy is growing steadily, but credit card lending is growing double that- rising more than 5% over a year earlier and accelerated to 6% in March and April, according to Federal Reserve data.

This is the fastest credit card debt has grown since card lending declined during the 2009 recession. Since Americans are not earning much more since that time- will delinquencies, charge-offs and bankruptcies begin to rise in another year or two?

Bad mortgages were at low levels in the mid-2000s, after numerous new loans were made, but before they had a chance to default, making loss measures a poor indicator of the 2008-09 credit crisis. Loan-loss rates measure the highest, not when bad loans are made, but when the loans stop getting paid.  This can take a year or two from the time the bills are accrued.

Loan losses can be masked by aggressive new lending, and exaggerated at banks that stop making new loans, allowing loss rates to mount. The most aggressive and fastest growing major card lenders include Capital One, Synchrony (formerly General Electric Finance), and Wells Fargo. Citi, Chase and other bigger lenders are expanding less aggressively.

For the nine dominant U.S. credit card banks, which control 70% of the Visa-MasterCard-American Express-Discover-Chinapay market in the U.S., average charge-offs in early 2016 were 3.13% of annualized average loans.

South Florida Ranks Number One in Credit Card Delinquencies

CredAbility, a non-profit credit counseling agency, conducted a study of 25 metro areas in the United States to determine the financial standings of major cities across the country. According to the study, Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties ranked highest in overall consumer credit card delinquencies. South Florida also ranked fourth of the 25 metro areas with the highest number of bankruptcy filings during the first quarter of 2012.
Much of the credit problems in South Florida can be attributed to lenders handing out credit cards to freely during the recession. Many South Floridians used their credit cards as spending money as they suffered pay cuts and job losses. Over time lenders began taking steps to hold borrowers to higher standards and not lending out money as freely as before. The financial problems for many South Floridians are not expected to ease up until the job market becomes more secure, which could take a couple more years.
